Nigerian Navy Launches Major Operation in Gulf of Guinea

The Nigerian Navy has initiated a significant operation to curb maritime crime in the Gulf of Guinea, deploying 10 ships and two helicopters as part of Exercise Obangame Express 2026. This operation was flagged off by Vice Admiral Idi Abba aboard the Nigerian Navy ship in Onne River State.

The exercise, which began in 2010 in collaboration with the U.S. Navy, aims to address various illegal activities, including piracy, sea robbery, and illicit trafficking.

The operation will also focus on anti-crude oil theft and unregulated fishing. Vice Admiral Abba emphasized the importance of strengthening regional maritime security cooperation and enhancing information sharing among nations.

The exercise is crucial for improving diplomatic relations and reinforcing collective security architecture in the Gulf of Guinea, which is vital for Nigeria's economic development. The Nigerian Navy's commitment to this operation has been supported by President Bola Tinubu, highlighting the strategic importance of the Gulf of Guinea as a major global trade route.
