Nigerian Navy Launches Major Anti-Maritime Crime Operation

The Nigerian Navy has initiated a significant operation against maritime crimes, deploying 10 ships and two helicopters as part of Exercise Obangame Express 2026. This operation was flagged off by Vice Admiral Idi Abba aboard the Nigerian Navy Ship Kada in Onne River State.

The exercise, which began in 2010 in collaboration with the United States Navy, focuses on combating piracy, sea robbery, illegal trafficking, and other illicit activities in the Gulf of Guinea. The Chief of Naval Staff emphasized that the operation aims to strengthen regional maritime security cooperation, enhance information sharing, and improve operational readiness against evolving maritime threats.

The exercise will involve various scenarios, including anti-drug trafficking and anti-crude oil theft operations. Rear Admiral P.E.

Effah and Rear Admiral C.D. Okehi also highlighted the importance of this operation in reinforcing diplomatic relations and naval partnerships within the region.

President Bola Tinubu's support for the armed forces was acknowledged as critical to the success of these operations.
