Nigerian Navy Partners with Global Forces to Combat Piracy

The Nigerian Navy, alongside Spain, the United States, France, and other countries, officially launched the 2026 Obangame Express exercise in Port Harcourt, River State. This annual multinational maritime security operation aims to enhance coordination and combat piracy, oil theft, and other illegal activities in the Gulf of Guinea.

Rear Admiral Patrick Effah, representing the Chief of Naval Staff Vice Admiral Idi Abba Abba, emphasized the exercise's goal to strengthen regional security and improve information sharing among participating nations. The exercise involves ten naval ships, two helicopters, and several special boats, with operations designed to create a favorable business environment in the region.

The naval chief noted that previous exercises had significant outcomes, including Nigeria's removal from the list of piracy-prone countries in 2022. Effah expressed gratitude for President Bola Tinubu's ongoing support for the Nigerian Navy and highlighted the importance of the exercise in reinforcing maritime security and protecting critical infrastructure against maritime crimes.
