Osinbajo Advocates People-Centred Justice Reform at NBA

During the 66th Annual General Conference of the Nigerian Bar Association in Port Harcourt, Rivers State, former Vice President Prof Yemi Osinbajo (SAN) advocated for reforms that prioritize citizens in the justice system. Represented by Ade Ipaye, a former Attorney-General and Commissioner for Justice in Lagos State, Osinbajo emphasized the importance of a people-centred approach to justice reform.

He urged stakeholders in Nigeria’s judiciary to gather data on justice needs and case outcomes to drive effective reforms. Osinbajo highlighted that justice reform should not be a government-only initiative but should involve state governments and institutions.

He called on the NBA to lead in policy development and professional growth, particularly in areas like mediation and legal aid. Osinbajo also pointed out that pro bono services could significantly enhance access to justice for citizens unable to afford legal representation.

He concluded that the central question is whether stakeholders are ready to redesign the justice system to meet the needs of those it serves.
