NBC Unveils Opportunities for Film Producers in Nigeria

The National Broadcasting Commission (NBC) has outlined opportunities and responsibilities for film producers as part of Nigeria's Digital Switch Over (DSO) initiative. Clementine Usman-Wamba, Head of the DSO Office at the NBC, presented these details during a seminar in Lagos themed ‘Film Producers: Building & Sustainability.’ The DSO is described as a cultural and economic transformation aimed at expanding access, improving content quality, and contributing an estimated N5 trillion to GDP, creating 2.7 million jobs by 2030, and a potential $100 billion in revenue.
Key opportunities for producers include a 60 percent local content mandate on FreeTV channels, which will increase demand for productions in local languages. Producers can monetize content through the FreeTV App marketplace and benefit from the NBC’s ViewTrack audience measurement system.
Six regional studios are being established to facilitate local content creation. Challenges such as piracy and infrastructure gaps were also noted, with a call for producers to adopt digital tools and partner with the NBC.
