NCAA Introduces RFID Technology for Baggage Tracking

The Nigeria Civil Aviation Authority (NCAA) has announced the introduction of Radio Frequency Identification (RFID) baggage tracking technology across Nigerian airports to eliminate incidents of missing luggage and delays. This decision follows numerous complaints from passengers regarding lost baggage.
Michael Achimugu, the Director of Public Affairs and Consumer Protection at NCAA, stated that the automated system will replace the traditional barcode-centric framework, allowing real-time visibility of checked luggage from check-in to final reclaim. Achimugu noted that baggage-related complaints are a significant frustration for travelers, second only to flight delays and cancellations.
The RFID technology will enable scanners to read multiple tags without needing a direct line-of-sight, improving the accuracy of baggage handling. Achimugu explained that the current barcode system is prone to errors, while RFID can instantly identify and locate misrouted luggage.
Standard regulations permit airlines up to seven days to locate short-landed baggage, but RFID tracking will expedite this process significantly.
