NCC Urges Nigerians to Embrace Reading and Copyright Laws

Dr. John Asein, the Director General of the Nigerian Copyright Commission (NCC), called on Nigerians to cultivate a strong reading culture and uphold copyright laws in a release issued on Friday, as part of activities marking the 2026 World Book Copyright Day.

He highlighted that books are vital tools for knowledge and cultural preservation, which are essential for national development. Asein noted that this year's theme, "Read a Book, Respect Copyright," underscores the importance of reading alongside protecting intellectual property.

He acknowledged the significant growth of Nigeria's book industry, which has its roots in the post-independence era and is now part of a modern, digit-driven ecosystem. Despite progress, he pointed out that piracy remains a major challenge that undermines legitimate business and reduces the economic value of creative works.

Asein praised the federal government's introduction of national intellectual property policies and emphasized the need for Nigerians to support the book industry by purchasing books from authorized sellers.
