NCC Launches New Measures Against Digital Piracy

On World Intellectual Property Day, Dr. John Asien, the Director General of the Nigerian Copyright Commission (NCC), announced the deployment of modern enforcement mechanisms to address digital piracy.

This initiative aims to combat unauthorized streaming of live sports content, which undermines legitimate markets and discourages investment. The NCC plans to collaborate with relevant national institutions to ensure coordinated responses against copyright infringement, leveraging provisions from the Copyright Act of 2022.

Mr. Cornelia Ibanga, representing Akwa Ibom State, highlighted the ongoing challenges posed by unauthorized content distribution.

The NCC's strategy aligns with the federal government's Renewed Hope Agenda, focusing on strengthening the protection of intellectual property across various sectors, including sports. Dr.

Asien emphasized the importance of equipping Nigerian youth with knowledge of intellectual property rights to enhance their competitiveness in the global market. Ms.

Enoobong Etuk, representing the Intellectual Property Society at the University of Uyo, expressed support for establishing a physical office to promote intellectual property awareness and innovation.
