NCC Launches Tech Initiative Against Digital Piracy

On World Intellectual Property Day, April 26, 2023, Dr. John Asien, the Director General of the Nigerian Copyright Commission (NCC), announced plans to deploy modern technology to combat digital piracy.

This initiative aims to enhance ongoing collaborations with relevant national institutions to ensure coordinated responses against unauthorized streaming of live sports content, which undermines legitimate markets and discourages investment. Mr.

Cornelia Ibanga, representing the NCC in Akwa Ibom State, highlighted the need for intensified enforcement efforts to address digital piracy and related infringements, leveraging provisions of the Copyright Act of 2022. The NCC's strategy is part of a broader framework to strengthen the protection of intellectual property across various sectors, including sports.

Dr. Asien emphasized the importance of equipping Nigerian youth with knowledge of intellectual property rights to position themselves within the industry and commercialize their talents.

Ms. Enoobong Etuk celebrated the establishment of a physical intellectual property society office in Uyo, which aims to boost youth self-reliance.
