NCC Launches Green Telecoms Initiative for Cost Reduction

The Nigerian Communications Commission (NCC) is launching a Green Telecoms Initiative to enhance the sustainability of the telecommunications sector in Nigeria. The initiative aims to achieve a 50% reduction in operational costs by encouraging telecom operators to adopt renewable energy solutions and environmentally friendly technologies.

Dr. Aminu Maida, the Executive Vice Chairman and CEO of NCC, emphasized the importance of this initiative during a recent green conference, noting that it would enable telecom operators to meet dual objectives of cost reduction and promoting eco-friendly operations.

Mr. Shuaibu Swade, the head of the project, highlighted the critical intersection of telecommunications and environmental sustainability, stating that the sector presents opportunities to reduce carbon emissions.

The NCC is also focused on improving environmental, social, and governance (ESG) standards across the telecommunications ecosystem, promoting infrastructure sharing among operators, and managing electronic waste generated by digital equipment. The initiative is part of a broader effort to transition Nigeria's telecommunications infrastructure towards greener practices.
