NCC Reports 170% Surge in Data Usage Amid Upgrades

The Nigerian Communications Commission (NCC), represented by Executive Vice Chairman Dr. Aminu Wada Maida, announced a significant 170% rise in data consumption attributed to ongoing upgrades in telecom infrastructure across Nigeria.

The NCC is committed to investing $1 billion in network upgrades, with the total industry-wide investment exceeding $1 billion from the previous year. The commission has set a target to upgrade 12,000 tower sites by 2026, with 2,800 already completed as of April.

To ensure compliance with new compensation guidelines for poor service, the NCC will engage an independent auditor to verify adherence by telecom providers. This initiative follows a directive mandating compensation for consumers experiencing unsatisfactory data and voice services.

The NCC is also collaborating with the Office of the National Security Adviser (ONSA) to reduce incidents of fiber cuts during construction nationwide. The commission encourages consumers to lodge complaints via its toll-free line or website.
