NCC Launches Free Data Initiative for Educational Access

The Nigerian Communications Commission (NCC) launched the Zero-Rated Data Access to Educational Platforms and Content initiative on Thursday to enhance access to educational resources and address educational inequalities in Nigeria. This initiative aims to support the country's economic growth through human capital investment.

Under the Operator-Sponsored Model, eligible users will receive up to 100 megabytes of free data daily for accessing designated educational platforms, totaling approximately 36.5GB annually. Dr. Aminu Maida, Executive Vice Chairman of the NCC, stated that this initiative aligns with President Bola Tinubu’s vision of building a $1 trillion economy, emphasizing the importance of education in economic development.

The initiative is designed to provide learners with free access to approved educational platforms, facilitating digital skills acquisition. Estimates suggest that the daily data allowance could enable learners to engage in two to five hours of study daily, depending on the type of learning activity, significantly expanding educational access across Nigeria.
