Nigeria's disease control agency says cholera transmission remains active nationwide with over 65,000 suspected cases reported across 35 states this year.

Nigeria's disease control agency has declared that cholera transmission persists across the nation, with no evidence suggesting containment has been achieved. During a press briefing held in Abuja, Director-General Dr Jide Idris disclosed that documented cases exceed 65,000 suspected infections spanning 35 states and approximately 195 local government areas throughout this year.

The pathogen continues circulating within communities, necessitating that the agency sustain its response operations. To halt further disease spread, Dr Idris emphasized that prevention approaches must receive ongoing commitment from both community members and healthcare institutions.

He underscored the vital importance of prompt testing and therapeutic availability, especially in Borno State where the disease has imposed considerable strain on public health infrastructure. According to the NCDC chief, administering treatment promptly upon symptom onset proves crucial for lowering infection fatality rates.

Beyond cholera, Nigeria simultaneously confronts a diphtheria epidemic. According to Dr Idris, the nation documented more than 10,000 confirmed diphtheria infections during 2026.

Although mortality from diphtheria has fallen relative to equivalent timeframes from previous years, this disease constitutes an ongoing major public health threat. Dr Idris identified vaccination strengthening as necessary for managing the persistent disease load.

The concurrent spread of both diseases throughout numerous Nigerian states reflects persistent hazards to community wellbeing. By releasing epidemiological statistics publicly and organizing a formal briefing, the NCDC demonstrates its view that rigorous disease management interventions remain prerequisite until transmission declines meaningfully.
