NDLEA Rearrests Drug Suspect Who Faked His Death

The National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA) has rearrested Ibrahim Yusuf Lawal, a 50-year-old drug trafficking suspect who allegedly faked his death to avoid prosecution. Lawal was initially arrested on February 5, 2022, at Ugbekun Junction in Esan Central Local Government Area, Edo State, where he was found in possession of 0.257 kg of Lexotan, 1 kg of Diazepam, and 5.4 kg of Phenobarbital concealed in a white Toyota bus with registration number BWR 401 XC, Abuja.

He was charged with three counts of unlawfully transporting controlled substances under the NDLEA Act. After being granted bail, Lawal absconded and failed to appear for trial.

His wife, Ibrahim Nana Hawa, submitted a fraudulent affidavit claiming he was deceased. However, NDLEA investigations revealed he was alive, leading to his covert apprehension.

Lawal was brought before Justice B.O. Quadri at the Federal High Court in Benin, with the case adjourned until June 22, 2026.

The NDLEA has stated it will prosecute all parties involved in the fraudulent scheme.
