NDLEA Seizes 1,499 Bottles of Codeine in Kano

The National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA) seized 1,499 bottles of codeine-based cough syrup in Kano and apprehended a suspect, Ashiru Bala, aged 45. The operation took place on February 25, 2026, in Lambu, Tofa Local Government Area, Kano State, following intelligence-led efforts by the NDLEA's Kano State Strategic Command.

Bala was intercepted while transporting the illicit substance intended for delivery to local drug dealers in Kano, contributing to a stockpile ahead of the Sallah celebration. During the investigation, Bala admitted to transporting illicit substances for two years and confirmed receiving substantial payments for his activities, indicating his awareness of the illegal nature of his actions.

The NDLEA's command, led by Assistant Superintendent Sadiq Muhammad Maigatari, emphasized the importance of their operations during periods of increased drug demand, particularly around festive seasons. This operation is part of the ongoing Ramadan Mubarak initiative aimed at ensuring a drug-free society, aligned with the national agenda championed by NDLEA Chairman Brig Gen Moha Buba Marwa (Rtd).
