NDPHC Restarts 450MW Alaoji Power Plant in Abia State

The Niger Delta Power Holding Company (NDPHC) announced the restoration of the 450MW Alaoji Power Plant in Abia State, which had been shut down for three years due to a gas supply dispute with TotalEnergies. Jennifer Adighij, the Managing Director and Chief Executive Officer of NDPHC, disclosed this during a meeting with Abia State Governor Alex Otti.

The plant's shutdown was attributed to issues surrounding gas supply, leading to TotalEnergies suspending supply due to accumulated debts. Upon assuming office in 2024, restoring the Alaoji plant became a priority for NDPHC.

Adighij noted that extensive electro-mechanical work has been completed, allowing three generating units (GT1, GT22, GT23) to be available for dispatch, contributing 375 megawatts to the national grid. Governor Otti commended the efforts to revive the plant, emphasizing its importance for economic growth and industrial development in the state.

Plans for future expansion of the plant to 800MW and eventually 1,100MW were also mentioned, contingent on available funding.
