NECO Exam Fraud: Questions Sold for N3,000 in Nigeria

On September 4, 2023, the Federal Government of Nigeria, represented by Minister of Education Dr Tunji Alausa, disclosed a deep-seated corruption issue within the public examination system. Alausa revealed that questions from the National Examinations Council (NECO) were allegedly sold for as low as N3,000 prior to examinations.

This malpractice has been tolerated for years, creating an unfair environment where students who prepare genuinely are at a disadvantage to those with access to leaked questions. Alausa expressed concern that this widespread cheating could corrupt even disciplined students, compelling them to cheat to compete.

He recounted experiences during the 2025 examination season, where he faced repeated instances of leaked questions. Alausa referenced former NECO Registrar Dantani Wushishi, alleging that his name was associated with a platform for purchasing exam questions.

The minister emphasized the detrimental impact of such practices on academic integrity and the culture of hard work among students.
