NEDC Approves ₦100bn for Solar Power in North-east

The North East Development Commission (NEDC) has approved an investment of ₦100 billion to deploy 50 megawatts of renewable energy across the six states of North-east Nigeria. Managing Director Alhaji Mohammed Alkali announced this decision during a briefing in Abuja following a board meeting.

The project aims to accelerate economic recovery and industrial development in the region, which suffers from inadequate electricity supply. Alkali stated that the initiative will be executed through solar-powered mini-grids, providing reliable electricity to schools, hospitals, markets, and rural communities.

He emphasized that the board identified insufficient electricity as the primary obstacle to development in the region. The implementation process is set to begin immediately, with the project expected to cost no less than ₦100 billion.

Alkali noted that approximately 61 percent of residents in the North-east lack reliable electricity, despite the region's abundant solar resources.
