NEMA Responds to Gas Explosion in Calabar, 43 Injured

On March 22, 2026, a gas explosion occurred in the Edib Edib area of Calabar South Local Government Area, Cross River State, leading to injuries for 43 individuals. The National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA) deployed a response team to the site following the incident.

Preliminary findings indicated that the explosion originated from a gas station and rapidly spread to nearby buildings, causing panic among residents and posing a significant fire risk. Of the 43 injured, 25 victims are currently receiving treatment at the University of Calabar Teaching Hospital, while 18 others are being treated at a general hospital.

NEMA's response team is collaborating with relevant stakeholders, including the Nigerian Red Cross Society, the Cross River State Emergency Management Agency, and the Cross River State Fire Service, whose prompt intervention helped control the situation. The agency is focused on managing the incident and providing necessary support to the victims.
