NESREA Honors Lagos Chief for Rescuing Endangered Turtle

The National Environmental Standards and Regulations Enforcement Agency (NESREA) has honored Chief Semiu Waliu Jejelaiye, the Baale of Okun Igando in Ibeju-Lekki, Lagos, for his significant role in preventing the killing of an endangered leatherback sea turtle. Jejelaiye received a commendation award from NESREA, alongside the Green Fingers Wildlife Conservation Initiative, for their collaborative efforts in rescuing the turtle caught by fishermen and ensuring its safe return to its natural habitat.
NESREA's director-general, Prof. Innocent Barikor, presented the awards on Wednesday, emphasizing the need for community action in wildlife protection. He stated that Okun Igando would serve as a focal point for campaigns aimed at raising awareness about endangered species.
Jejelaiye mobilized community members to protect the turtle and notified environmental authorities for its proper handling. NESREA also praised the Green Fingers Wildlife Conservation Initiative for its expertise and educational efforts in wildlife protection.
The leatherback turtle is protected under Nigeria’s National Environmental Regulations and CITES.
