NESREA Launches Regulations to Combat Plastic Waste Pollution

The National Environmental Standards and Regulations Enforcement Agency (NESREA) has called for enhanced collaboration among stakeholders to address plastic waste pollution in Nigeria. This appeal was made by the Director-General, Professor Innocent Barikor, during the launch of the National Environmental Plastic Waste Control Regulations, 2026, in Abuja.

Mallam Balarabe Lawal, the Minister of Environment, was represented by Mallam Salihu Usman, the Permanent Secretary in the Ministry, who reiterated the Federal Government’s dedication to fostering a pollution-free environment for Nigerians. Professor Barikor highlighted the launch as a crucial step towards implementing the regulations, which aim to reduce plastic pollution and create job opportunities within the plastic value chain.

Mr. Massimo De Luca, representing the European Union, noted that the inauguration reflects the Nigerian Government’s commitment to environmental protection. Stakeholders were urged to support the implementation of the regulations, emphasizing that sustained collaboration is essential to effectively combat plastic waste pollution across the nation.
