NESREA Closes Oyo Factory for Toxic Waste Violations

The National Environmental Standards and Regulations Enforcement Agency (NESREA) has shut down a factory in Oyo State for discharging untreated industrial wastewater, which constitutes a serious environmental violation. The action followed public complaints and an independent verification that led NESREA to conduct a compliance inspection on February 18, 2026.

The inspection revealed that the facility failed to act on previous directives to install and operate an effluent treatment system and lacked the necessary environmental permits. Nwamaka Ejiofor, Assistant Director of Press at NESREA, confirmed that the facility was discharging untreated wastewater with an offensive odor directly into the environment, clearly breaching national regulations.

Innoc Barikor, the Director General of NESREA, emphasized the agency's commitment to enforcing environmental regulations and warned that the facility would remain closed until full compliance is achieved. NESREA will continue to monitor compliance and impose sanctions on violators.
