NRS to Collect Mineral Royalties from January 2026

The Nigeria Revenue Service (NRS) has been designated as the authority responsible for the collection of mineral royalties across the country, effective January 1, 2026. This change follows the enactment of a new tax law on June 26, 2025, under President Bola Tinubu's administration.

The announcement was made during a meeting held on April 2, 2026, which involved collaboration between the NRS and the Ministry of Solid Minerals Development, represented by Mr. Dele Alak and Zacch Adedeji, respectively.

The NRS will provide technical regulatory oversight and support for the implementation of the new royalty framework, which includes a nationwide sensitization program for mining operators. The initiative aims to ensure compliance with the new tax law and facilitate the development of a modern digital royalty administration system.

Dare Adekanmbi, special adviser to the NRS chairman, emphasized the commitment to work transparently and support the solid minerals sector's growth.
