The Nigerian Exchange closed at 246,943.98 points on Monday with mixed sentiment as strong gainers in financials and insurance were offset by sharp declines in energy and beverages stocks. Trading activity remained robust with ₦51.1 billion in total value across 480 million shares.

The NGX delivered a session of competing forces on Monday, with retail investors caught between compelling opportunities in financial services and troubling weakness in traditionally stable sectors. The index closed at 246,943.98 points amid 63,980 deals valued at ₦51.1 billion—a healthy volume that underscores continued market participation despite directional uncertainty.

Financial stocks drove today's bullish narrative. CNIF surged 9.95% to ₦140.30, climbing ₦12.70 in absolute terms, while THOMASWY advanced 9.92% and VFDGROUP gained 9.86%. These coordinated moves suggest renewed appetite for exposure to Nigeria's financial ecosystem, though the concentration of gains in this sector points to sector rotation rather than broad-based strength. CHAMS and LASACO followed suit with 8.44% and 7.69% gains respectively.

However, insurance and energy stocks told a darker story. TRANSPOWER collapsed 10% to ₦219.60, shedding ₦24.40 per share, while SUNUASSUR and INTBREW mirrored the decline with identical 10% and 9.85% losses respectively. FTGINSURE and AUSTINLAZ fell 9.68% and 9.64%, indicating sector-wide pressure. Most-traded volume remained concentrated in blue chips—ACCESSCORP, FIRSTHOLDCO, and MBENEFIT dominated turnover—suggesting investors are rotating within familiar holdings rather than chasing new opportunities.

The ₦159.3 trillion market capitalization masks underlying volatility between sectors. Retail investors should monitor whether tomorrow's session brings stabilization in energy and insurance or confirms the financial sector's newfound momentum. Watch for volume concentration patterns to clarify the market's true directional bias in the next session.
