The Nigerian Exchange closed at 243,957.18 points with mixed sentiment as strong gainers in industrial and transport stocks were offset by sharp declines in consumer staples. BUAFOODS and UNILEVER led losses, while ETI and INTENEGINS drove gains, signalling sector-specific rather than broad-based momentum.

The NGX delivered a mixed performance on Wednesday, with market breadth tilted toward losses despite notable strength in select industrial counters. The ASI settled at 243,957.18 points as investors digested divergent sectoral dynamics.

Consumer staples bore the brunt of selling pressure, with BUAFOODS plummeting 10.00% (₦84.50 decline to ₦760.60) and UNILEVER shedding 9.97% (₦14.55 to ₦131.40). This coordinated weakness in blue-chip consumer names suggests profit-taking or sector-wide reassessment rather than isolated weakness. JOHNHOLT and AUSTINLAZ also retreated, reinforcing downward pressure across discretionary and staples segments.

Conversely, industrial and logistics players gained traction. ETI surged 9.93% (₦6.45 to ₦71.40), while TRANSEXPR climbed 9.77% (₦0.21 to ₦2.36), indicating rotational interest toward infrastructure and transport plays. INTENEGINS, CWG, and CORNERST added 10.00%, 9.74%, and 6.80% respectively, suggesting selective institutional accumulation in smaller-cap industrials.

Volume activity concentrated in financial names, with FTGINSURE dominating at 853.16 million shares, followed by UNIVINSURE (251.81 million). This liquidity concentration in insurance stocks underscores typical retail-driven trading patterns, though aggregate turnover of ₦20.02 billion reflected moderate session intensity.

Market capitalisation stood at ₦157.49 trillion, with 38,221 total deals executed. The sectoral divergence—consumer weakness versus industrial strength—suggests investors are repositioning ahead of potential macro developments.
