Nigerian Wins 2026 Stockholm Junior Water Prize

Moroti Adegboyega, a young Nigerian, has been recognized as the overall winner of the 2026 Stockholm Junior Water Prize in Sweden. The Nigerians in Diaspora Commission (NiDCOM) congratulated him through a statement by Abdur-Rahman Balogun, the Director of Media, Public Relations and Protocols Unit.

Dr. Abike Dabiri-Erewa, Chairman/CEO of NiDCOM, described Adegboyega's achievement as a remarkable feat that showcases the talent and innovation of young Nigerians globally. Adegboyega, who is the son of the Vice President of the Nigerian Canadian Association of Newfoundland and Labrador (NCANL), developed an autonomous, AI-guided robot that utilizes biodegradable ferrofluid to remove plastic from water, significantly outperforming conventional methods in collecting microplastics.

The Stockholm Junior Water Prize is an international competition for students aged 15-20 addressing major water challenges, attracting participants from around 40 countries. Dabiri-Erewa commended the support from the Nigerian community in Newfoundland and Labrador and encouraged Adegboyega to continue being a worthy ambassador for Nigeria.
