Umahi Urges Anambra, Delta to Combat Niger Bridge Vandalism

On September 24, 2026, David Umahi, the Minister of Works, called on the governors of Anambra and Delta states to closely monitor scrap markets to prevent further theft and vandalism of critical infrastructure at the First Niger Bridge. During an assessment of rehabilitation work at the Onitsha end of the bridge, Umahi expressed concern over vandalism, which has cost the Federal Government significant funds for repairs.

The bridge was closed to traffic from September 7 to 21 for emergency rehabilitation due to vandalized structural components. The closure was extended by a week due to persistent rainfall.

Umahi stated that he would write to the governors to enforce monitoring of scrap activities, recalling his previous ban on such activities in Ebonyi State. He also directed the removal of illegal billboards on the bridge and reiterated a ban on illegal sand dredging nearby.

Umahi assured residents that the bridge would reopen the following week upon completion of the rehabilitation work.
