Niger State Strengthens Fight Against Rape and Abuse

Hajiya Hadiza Kuta, the head of the Niger State Commission for Women Affairs and Social Development, has expressed deep concern over the rising number of reported cases of rape and child molestation in Niger State. During a press briefing in Minna, she emphasized the government's determination to ensure justice for victims.

Kuta mentioned her recent attendance at a court hearing involving a teenage girl allegedly impregnated by her grandfather, along with several similar cases in Kontagora. She noted that the ministry is collaborating with relevant authorities to explore measures that would make bail difficult for suspects of serious rape and child abuse cases.

Governor Umaru Moham Bago has pledged support for stronger actions against offenders. Kuta also identified social stigma and lack of family support as major obstacles to prosecuting rape cases, urging parents and community leaders to support victims instead of stigmatizing them.

She stressed the need for rehabilitation and psychological care for survivors.
