Niger State Mobilizes Communities Against Disease Threats

Niger State is taking proactive measures to combat disease threats by rallying communities to strengthen disease surveillance systems and enhance emergency response capacities. This initiative follows the confirmation of three new polio cases in the Magama and Mariga local government areas, alongside recorded diphtheria infections in Bida, Chanchaga, and Suleja.

Abubakar Kpantu, from the state immunization office, emphasized the need for improved routine immunization and public awareness to protect vulnerable populations. The rainy season raises concerns about potential cholera outbreaks, prompting health officials to monitor the situation closely.

A town hall meeting was organized in Bida, bringing together health experts, traditional institutions, faith-based leaders, and community representatives to discuss disease prevention strategies. Adamu Mamba, a UNICEF social behavior change facilitator, underscored the importance of early disease detection and compliance with public health recommendations, highlighting the influential role of traditional and religious leaders in promoting accurate health information and vaccination support.
