Nigeria Launches Comprehensive Vaccine Safety Response Plan

Nigeria is recognized as one of the first countries to create a comprehensive Vaccine-Related Events (VRE) Response Plan, according to Dr. Janet Gidudu, the Global Immunization Safety Team Lead at the United States Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (US CDC). This announcement was made during the official launch of the Nigeria Vaccine-Related Events Response Plan and AEFI Surveillance Field Guide in Abuja.

Dr. Gidudu emphasized that this development is a significant step toward strengthening vaccine safety and public confidence in immunization, stating that Nigeria's experience could serve as a model for other African countries. She highlighted the necessity for collaboration among stakeholders to ensure vaccine safety and the importance of generating local vaccine safety data.

Dr. Gidudu also stressed the need for transparency and effective communication to maintain public trust, particularly in the face of adverse events following vaccination. The US CDC has supported Nigeria's vaccine safety activities for several years.
