Nigeria and China Mark 55 Years of Diplomatic Relations

Nigeria and China commemorated the 55th anniversary of their diplomatic relations on February 10, 2026, reaffirming their commitment to deepen cooperation across various sectors, including culture, economy, and technology. Yang Jianx, the Cultural Counselor at the Chinese Embassy in Nigeria, emphasized the enduring and mutually beneficial relationship between the two nations.

The anniversary coincides with the "China-Africa Year of People-to-People Exchange," marking a significant year for bilateral relations. Yang noted that exchanges between the two countries continue to expand, with increased visits and collaborations in various fields.

The Chinese envoy highlighted recent trade measures, including a zero-tariff policy for 53 African countries, which aims to create new economic opportunities for Nigeria. The cultural exhibition featuring traditional Chinese calligraphy and virtual reality experiences will run at the China Cultural Center in Abuja until July 10.

Mukhtar Muhammad, the Permanent Secretary of the Federal Ministry of Innovation, Science, and Technology, acknowledged the strong relationship and ongoing collaborations in science and technology.
