Nigeria Offers Condolences to Japan After Earthquake

The Government and people of the Federal Republic of Nigeria have expressed profound concern regarding the powerful 7.1 magnitude earthquake that struck Kumamoto Prefecture in southern Japan on July 28, 2026. On behalf of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, GCFR, the Honourable Minister of Foreign Affairs, Ambassador Bianca Odumegwu-Ojukwu, conveyed heartfelt condolences to the Government and people of Japan, particularly to the families of those who lost their lives, the injured, and all affected by this disaster.

Nigeria stands in solidarity with Japan during this challenging time and commends the swift response of Japanese authorities and emergency services. The Nigerian government reaffirmed the strong bonds of friendship and cooperation between the two nations and expressed prayers for the quick recovery of the injured, the safety of those unaccounted for, and the resilience of the people of Kumamoto and the wider Kyushu region as they begin to rebuild.
