Nigeria Offers Condolences to Colombia After Earthquake

The Nigerian Government conveyed deep sorrow and sympathy to the Government and people of Colombia after a magnitude 7.4 earthquake struck western Colombia on August 10, 2026. This earthquake is noted as the strongest recorded in Colombia this century, resulting in considerable loss of life, injuries, and extensive damage to homes, hospitals, schools, and critical infrastructure in areas such as Chocó, Valle del Cauca, and Risaralda.

In a statement from Kimiebi Ebienfa, the Spokesperson of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Nigeria extended heartfelt condolences to the families of victims and wished those injured a swift recovery. The Nigerian Government expressed confidence in the resilience and unity of the Colombian people as they engage in search-and-rescue operations and begin rebuilding efforts.

Additionally, Nigeria commended the leadership of President Abelardo de la Espriella during the emergency response and recovery operations. Both nations maintain diplomatic relations and cooperate in various areas of mutual interest.
