Nigeria Faces Urgent Shortage of Health Professionals

The Nigerian Federal Government, represented by Minister Tunji Alausa, has raised concerns about a critical shortage of specialized health professionals, which is affecting service delivery across the nation. During the inauguration of a national committee aimed at advancing occupational therapy, audiology, and speech therapy education in Abuja, Alausa outlined the government's renewed focus on strengthening specialized education in rehabilitation therapy.

He highlighted the growing demand for trained professionals in hospitals and schools, noting that the current higher education system has not fully developed structured training pathways in these critical fields. Alausa pointed out that many universities do not offer structured bachelor's degree programs in these disciplines, which limits alignment with global best practices.

The newly inaugurated committee, chaired by Dr. Victoria Amu from Edo State Specialist Hospital, is tasked with developing curricula and ensuring accreditation standards to improve the quality of training programs.

Alausa stressed the importance of collaboration with relevant institutions to enhance educational outcomes and support individuals with disabilities and trauma.
