NERC Reports 707,765 New Electricity Meters Installed
The Nigerian Electricity Regulatory Commission (NERC) reported that Nigeria installed a total of 707,765 electricity meters within six months, comprising 357,495 meters in the first quarter and 350,270 meters in the second quarter of 2026. This marks a significant increase compared to the 187,161 meters installed in Q1 2025 and 225,631 in Q2 2025.
The increase in installations is part of the Federal Government and electricity distribution companies' efforts to expand metering, reduce unmetered customers, and enhance billing transparency in the Nigerian Electricity Supply Industry (NESI). In Q2 2026, 350,270 meters were installed, with the Distribution Sector Recovery Programme (DISREP) contributing the largest share of 205,486 meters, which is 58.67% of the total installations for that quarter.
Additionally, 123,833 meters were installed under the Meter Asset Provider (MAP) framework, 13,028 under the Metering Asset Finance (MAF) framework, 7,643 under the DisCo-financed framework, and 280 under the Vendor Financed framework. By the end of June 2026, 7,743,839 out of 12,589,486 active registered customers in NESI were metered, resulting in a metering rate of 61.51%, leaving over 4.8 million customers unmetered.
