Nigeria's Education Ministry to Launch AI Query Tool

Nigeria is set to enhance its national education-data system by introducing an artificial intelligence interface that allows education officials to query government records using ordinary language. This initiative is part of a consultancy by UNICEF, advertised on October 21, to support the Federal Ministry of Education’s Digital Nigeria Education Management Information System (DNEMIS), which operates on the DHIS2 platform.
The AI-enabled tool will enable authorized users to ask questions in natural language and receive analyses, summaries, and visualizations based on official education data. The implementation will begin with pilot tests at federal and state levels before broader deployment.
DNEMIS was established to replace a fragmented education-reporting process that relied on paper records and lengthy annual school census analyses, which could take nearly two years to yield usable information. The current system encompasses Nigeria’s 36 states, the Federal Capital Territory, and 774 local government areas, covering approximately 222,000 schools.
The new AI layer aims to enhance the usability of this information.
