Nigeria Advocates for Women Empowerment at UN CSW70

Nigeria is actively promoting its women empowerment agenda at the 70th session of the United Nations Commission on the Status of Women, currently taking place at the United Nations Headquarters in New York. The delegation is led by Minister of Women Affairs and Social Development, Imaan Ibrahim Suleiman.

In her address, Suleiman outlined several initiatives implemented by the administration of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu to improve the welfare of citizens, particularly women and children. She emphasized Nigeria's alignment with the African group's position at the summit, reaffirming the country's commitment to gender equality and women's empowerment as foundational to inclusive growth and justice.

Suleiman also highlighted that 2026 has been declared as Nigeria's Year of Family Social Development, reflecting the administration's belief that strong families are essential for empowering women and protecting children. Under her leadership, Nigeria's social protection system has expanded significantly, with projections indicating that nearly 10 million households will benefit by 2026, with women constituting 70 percent of the primary beneficiaries.
