Nigeria Finalizes Boxing Team for Commonwealth Games Today

The final selection of Nigeria's boxing contingent for the Commonwealth Games will occur today, with a total of 128 boxers, comprising 101 men and 27 women, competing in 10 weight categories. The trials began on Tuesday, March 3, and are taking place at the Brai Ayonot Boxing Complex located in the National Stadium, Lagos.

Vivian Azimen, the Secretary General of the Nigeria Boxing Federation (NBF), stated that outstanding athletes were selected for the final cut and invited to a training camp. The tournament has seen exciting participation from both home-based and foreign boxers.

Notably, in the men's 75kg category, Wahab Abdulrahman defeated Qudu Adeniji to advance to the semifinals, while Quadri Ilori won against Israel Ogbodo by split decision. Nigeria aims to present boxers in 10 weight categories, with five men (55kg, 65kg, 70kg, 80kg, 90kg) and five women (51kg, 57kg, 65kg, 70kg, 70kg).

Nigeria's boxing team previously excelled at the 2022 Commonwealth Games in Birmingham, returning home with four medals.
