Nigeria to Host Africa's First Global AMR Conference in 2026

Nigeria is set to host the first global conference on Antimicrobial Resistance (AMR) on African soil from December 6 to 8, 2026, in Abuja. The event aims to strengthen international cooperation and accelerate action against AMR, which poses serious threats to public health, food security, and environmental sustainability.
Iziaq Adekunle Salako, the minister of state for health and social welfare, presented a joint ministerial position on behalf of four federal ministries, warning that AMR is one of the gravest threats to health and agriculture. The 2022 Lancet-GRAM study indicated that AMR was responsible for an estimated 1.27 million deaths globally in 2019, including 64,500 in Nigeria.
Without urgent interventions, over 39 million deaths could be attributed to AMR worldwide by 2050. The conference, themed “One Health: Advancing Global AMR Commitment Through Local Action,” will review global commitments and is expected to result in the adoption of the Abuja Compact on Antimicrobial Resistance.
