Nigeria's Athletics Team Heads to Ghana for Championships

Team Nigeria will depart for the 2026 African Senior Athletics Championships in Accra, Ghana, with a contingent of 41 athletes, comprising 17 males and 24 females. The championships are scheduled to run from May 12 to 17.

The team will be led by Tonobok Okowa, President of the Athletics Federation of Nigeria (AFN), and will include 10 technical officials. The squad features a mix of foreign-based and home-based athletes, supervised by AFN Technical Director Gabriel Okon and National Head Coach Solomon Aliyu.

Notable athletes include world record holder Tobi Amusan, sprinter Rosemari Chukwuma, and quarter miler Favour Ash. Nigeria aims to strengthen its medal chances despite setbacks, including the absence of decathlon record holder Jami Schlueter and shot put record holder Jessica Oji due to visa complications.

Okowa confirmed that the federation is working to resolve travel issues affecting foreign-based athletes.
