Nigerian Government Condemns Child Abuse and Online Violence

The Nigerian government, through a statement from the Ministry, condemned child abuse and online violence, labeling these incidents as serious violations of children's rights. The Ministry emphasized that parental authority should not undermine a child's dignity and fundamental rights.

It commended the Nigeria Police Force and Abia State Ministry of Women Affairs for their prompt intervention in a case in Aba, which included the arrest of the alleged perpetrator and the placement of the child in protective care. Additionally, the Ministry praised the Nigeria Police, Anambra State Command, and the state Ministry of Women Affairs for their swift response to a case in Onitsha involving a mother allegedly abusing her daughters.

The Ministry warned against the circulation of abusive material online, stating it further violates children's privacy and dignity. It urged Nigerians to report such content to law enforcement and highlighted the legal frameworks established by the Child Rights Act 2003 and the Violence Against Persons (Prohibition) Act 2015 to protect children from abuse.
