Ogun State Prepares for Heavy Rainfall and Flooding

Ogun State's Deputy Governor Noimot Salako-Oyedele called for immediate preparedness measures in anticipation of a 72-hour period of heavy rainfall and potential flooding. This announcement was made on Wednesday in Abeokuta during a flood disaster response simulation exercise organized by the National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA) for South-West states.

The 2026 Seasonal Climate Prediction and Annual Flood Outlook identified several locations within Ogun State as high-risk flood-prone areas. Salako-Oyedele emphasized the importance of community involvement in disaster management, urging residents to heed early warning alerts, avoid building on waterways, and refrain from dumping refuse in drainage channels.

Commodore Nature Usman, representing the Director General of NEMA, stressed the need for improved coordination among agencies and communities, citing past disasters as examples of the consequences of inadequate preparedness. The simulation aimed to test response plans and identify gaps in inter-agency communication before an actual emergency occurs.
