Nigeria's Government Warns of Flood Risks for 27 States

The Federal Government of Nigeria has issued a flood alert affecting 27 states and the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), warning of possible flooding between September 27 and October 10, 2026. This warning was released by the National Flood Early Warning Systems Centre under the Federal Ministry of Environment.

The advisory indicates that affected areas may face elevated soil moisture, rainfall, rapid surface runoff, drainage surcharge, and rising river levels, which could lead to flooding. Communities are categorized into Critical Risk, High Risk, and Moderate Risk Watchlist based on anticipated flood exposure.

Critical Risk states include Benue, Kogi, Kwara, Niger, Adamawa, Bauchi, Taraba, Rivers, Edo, Delta, Cross River, Bayelsa, Akwa Ibom, Abia, Anambra, Ebonyi, Enugu, Imo, Ekiti, Lagos, Ogun, Ondo, Osun, and Oyo. The FCT is classified under High Risk, with specific areas listed.

The Centre has advised immediate flood watch measures for Critical Risk areas and urged all residents to comply with evacuation instructions and take precautions against flooding.
