Ogun State Issues Flood Alert Ahead of Rainy Season

The Ogun State Government, through Commissioner for Environment Ola Oresanya, has issued a flood alert in anticipation of the second phase of the 2026 rainy season, which is expected to begin in September. The Nigerian Meteorological Agency has forecasted heavy rainfall in Ogun State, with an average of about 360mm expected in September.

The first phase of the rainy season, from mid-March to July, resulted in intense rainfall and isolated flash floods, but the impact was minimal due to proactive government measures such as public awareness, maintenance of waterways, and waste management improvements. Oresanya warned that prolonged rainfall could lead to river and coastal flooding, particularly affecting communities such as Isheri, Arepo, and parts of Abeokuta, among others.

He urged residents in these areas to remain vigilant and relocate to safer locations if necessary. Additionally, fish farmers in vulnerable areas were advised to harvest their stocks promptly to minimize losses.
