Nigerian governors pledge welfare, integrity focus at 2026 NYSC swearing-in

State governors across Nigeria have used swearing-in ceremonies for the 2026 Batch B Stream II National Youth Service Corps to reaffirm their administrations' backing for the scheme and set expectations for the incoming cohort of youth corps members. Rivers State Governor Siminalayi Fubara, represented at Thursday's ceremony at the Nonwa-Gbam orientation camp in Tai Local Government Area, stressed the need for corps members to demonstrate integrity and remain dedicated to building the nation.

Similar pledges came from governors in Akwa Ibom, Adamawa, and Abia states during Friday ceremonies. Akwa Ibom State Governor Umo Eno used the occasion to call on corps members to forge friendships that transcend ethnic and regional lines during their time at the orientation camp.

Eno suggested that bonds formed during the NYSC experience could eventually influence Nigeria's trajectory, linking camp relationships to broader national cohesion and development. Infrastructure development featured prominently in announcements from other states.

Adamawa State Governor Ahmadu Fintiri revealed that construction of a new permanent orientation camp in the state had reached an advanced stage and would be ready for subsequent batches. Abia State Governor Alex Otti unveiled a package targeting improved conditions for corps members, encompassing welfare support, infrastructure upgrades, and entrepreneurship programs at the Umunna orientation facility in Bende Local Government Area.

The ceremonies reflect a pattern of state-level engagement with the NYSC scheme across multiple regions. Governors emphasized different priorities—from character development in Rivers to unity messaging in Akwa Ibom to facility modernization in Adamawa and Abia—indicating varied approaches to supporting the federal youth service initiative at the state level.
