Nigerian Military Addresses US Troop Withdrawal Concerns

The Nigerian military, represented by Major General Samaila Uba, spokesperson for the Defence Headquarters, addressed concerns regarding the withdrawal of about 200 US troops from Nigeria, stating it should not be interpreted as a breakdown in security ties between Nigeria and the United States. This clarification was made during a security briefing at the National Counter Terrorism Centre on Tuesday.

Uba explained that the troop withdrawal is a routine adjustment related to specific mission objectives, not a termination of the Nigeria-US security partnership. The US troops were initially deployed in February to assist in combat operations against ISIS fighters, and their role included intelligence sharing and military education.

Uba reiterated that the defence relationship remains "strong, enduring, and mutually beneficial," and that core elements such as intelligence sharing and training are still active. He urged the media and public to avoid overinterpreting the troop reduction, emphasizing that Nigeria's security responsibility lies primarily with its own forces.
