Iran's Missile Attack on UAE Raises Concerns for Nigerians

On March 14, 2023, Iran launched a significant attack on the UAE, firing multiple ballistic missiles and drones, which resulted in six fatalities and 141 injuries, including foreign nationals from Nigeria, Pakistan, Nepal, and Bangladesh. The UAE's Minister of Defence confirmed that their air defense systems intercepted several of the missiles and drones during this assault, which has been described as a major escalation of ongoing regional tensions.

The attack heightened concerns within the Nigerian community in the UAE, where thousands of Nigerians work in sectors such as construction, hospitality, logistics, and trade. The Nigerian government has raised concerns regarding the safety and welfare of its citizens abroad, particularly in light of recent diplomatic tensions and visa restrictions affecting Nigerians.

The UAE remains fully prepared to confront any threats to its security, as stated by its Minister of Defence. The Iranian Revolutionary Guard Corps has warned that U.S. interests in the UAE are legitimate targets, further escalating the situation.
