NCC Enhances Telecom Services for Nigerians Amid Challenges

The Nigerian Communications Commission (NCC) is intensifying efforts to improve telecommunications services in Nigeria, addressing concerns over call quality and internet speed. Nnena Ukoha, head of public affairs at NCC, stated that the commission has focused on enhancing service quality over the past two years.

The telecom sector is undergoing significant modernization, with mobile network operators investing ₦2.13 trillion in infrastructure upgrades by 2025. Additionally, tower companies have contributed ₦373.8 billion to support this expansion.

The NCC aims to upgrade 12,000 sites by 2026, having already completed nearly 3,000 sites and deploying 730 additional 5G sites across 27 states. Recent assessments indicate a gradual improvement in network capacity and internet speed, with 4G penetration increasing from 45% in January 2024 to 54% currently.

Despite these advancements, the NCC acknowledges ongoing challenges, including vandalism and power disruptions, and plans to implement regulatory measures to ensure service standards are met.
