Nigeria's Ambassador-designate to Algeria Mahamud Lele Dies

Mahamud Lele, Nigeria's Ambassador-designate to Algeria, died at the age of 50. His passing occurred in the early hours of April 19, 2026, in Ankara, Turkey, where he had been receiving treatment for an illness.

The Ministry of Foreign Affairs confirmed his death in a statement issued in Abuja by spokesperson Kimiebi Ebienfa. Lele was appointed by President Bola Ahmed Tinubu and had recently received Senate confirmation for his role.

Born in 1976 in Gamawa, Bauchi State, Lele studied economics at Bayero University, Kano. He held various diplomatic positions, including assignments in Berlin, Lomé, and Riyadh.

The Ministry described him as a dedicated career diplomat with a distinguished record of service, noting that his death represents a significant loss for Nigeria's foreign service. His remains were received at Nnamdi Azikiwe International Airport, Abuja, and were to be buried in Kano according to Islamic rites.
