Nigeria’s legal system frustrating military, fueling insecurity – CDS

Nigeria's Chief of Defence Staff, General Christopher Musa, has expressed concern that the country's slow and weak legal system is hindering military efforts to combat terrorism, banditry, and organized crime, leading to worsening insecurity nationwide. In an interview, Musa highlighted that troops often risk their lives to apprehend suspects only to see them released on technicalities or given token penalties, which demoralizes the armed forces and emboldens criminals.

He emphasized the need for faster trials and tougher punishments to match the gravity of the crimes threatening national security. Musa also pointed out regional and international factors aggravating insecurity, such as arms smuggling and the flow of foreign fighters into the country.

Despite challenges, he noted progress in better community engagement and disrupting armed group recruitment pipelines. Musa warned that without stronger laws and swift justice, military gains could be reversed, urging lawmakers to urgently review terrorism and organized crime laws.

He stressed the importance of stronger border security and closer cooperation with neighboring states to address.
